Breast Lift or Breast Reduction?

Good Candidates for Breast Lifts and Breast Reductions
Since breast lifts and breast reductions are so similar, the qualities of a good candidate are essentially the same. The women should be in good health condition, be mentally stable and have realistic expectations. Women should listen to what their surgeon says and compare that to what she is expecting so that any confusion can be cleared up early. Furthermore, any women considering one of these breast procedures should note that noticeable scarring will result. This may or may not be of concern to the woman but it can change the final appearance of the breast. Discuss your plans for surgery with your surgeon to make sure you do not have any risky health conditions or unrealistic goals.
Breast Lifts
The main goal of a breast lift is to reposition the breast mound to a higher location and likewise re-situate the nipple and areola tissue. A breast life does not imply a change in tissue volume of either addition or reduction it merely refers to a literal lift of the breast. An important distinction to make is that a breast lift also does not make the breast tissue firmer. Although a lift will give a more youthful appearance to the breasts nothing in the United States has been approved for changing the firmness. Often patients will request a breast enhancement procedure in addition to the breast lift and this is the only way to legally firm the breast in the US. A breast enhancement involves the insertion of breast implant and will increase the size and alter the shape of the breast mound. During the procedure your doctor will start with using a marker to draw incision marks on your breast. These lines will act as a guide for your doctor during the operation to make sure the correct changes are made. Next, the outer layer of the breast is cut away to reveal the underlying dermis and fatty components. The breast skin is then separated from the breast gland and breast fat as well as the breast muscles in the lower 2/3 of the breast. A stitch is placed in this lower region and the lower aspects of the breast are thus "lifted" and tucked higher. The bottom section of the breast is basically pulled up under the top portion and folded on itself, no tissue is actually removed. Finally, the breast is rotated and sewn together to create a symmetrical mound. Internal stitches close the remainder of the wound and surgery is complete. Breast Reductions
Breast reductions involve the same steps as a breast lift with one exception. Instead of simply pulling the lower section of breast upward, the lower section is completely removed. This removal of the breast gland and fat results in a breast that is smaller and less cumbersome. Breast reductions are ideal for women who have very large breasts and suffer back pain or other issues. Often women with large breasts have difficulty finding clothing that best suits their body because they must take their breast size into account.
Risks of These Procedures
As with any surgery, risks are present in breast lifts and breast reductions. Breast reductions have greater risk due to the removal of tissue. Overall, risks of both include excess bleeding, pain, excessive firmness, asymmetry of breasts, unsatisfactory results, allergic reactions, breast disease, delayed healing and infection. A comprehensive discussion with your doctor prior to surgery will help minimize these risks and give you a healthy and successful surgery.
